What Is the Best Time of Year for a Hudson Valley Wedding?

There is no bad season for a Hudson Valley wedding. There are, however, very different versions of the Hudson Valley depending on when you get married.

Spring and summer

Spring brings fresh green landscapes, flowering trees and cooler temperatures. It can also bring rain and unpredictable temperature swings. If you are planning an outdoor spring ceremony, the rain plan should be something you genuinely like rather than a backup you hope nobody sees.

Summer gives couples long days and lush landscapes, and it is ideal for properties built around lakes, gardens, patios and outdoor cocktail hours. The tradeoff is heat. Look closely at shade, air conditioning and how long guests will be outside.

Fall

Fall is one of the reasons people travel to the Hudson Valley in the first place. The mountains and river corridor can be spectacular as the leaves change, but couples chasing foliage should remember that peak color is not a single guaranteed weekend. It varies by elevation, location and weather.

October is also extremely popular, which affects venue and vendor availability. Fall weekends at retreat properties such as Foxfire Mountain House in Mount Tremper are among the first to go each year, so if a foliage wedding is the dream, start that conversation early.

Winter

Winter deserves more consideration than it gets. A property with fireplaces, strong interiors and lodging can become incredibly atmospheric once the landscape changes. Mohonk Mountain House hosts weddings year-round, and its Victorian interiors and mountain setting make winter feel intentional rather than an off-season compromise.

Ask the venue, not Pinterest

The best season ultimately depends on the venue. A venue chosen for a sweeping mountain view may feel completely different in November than in October. A garden venue peaks at a different time from a forest property, and a winery has its own seasonal rhythm.

Before choosing a date, ask the venue what the property actually looks like during that month, and ask for real wedding photographs from the same time of year. That will tell you far more than a Pinterest board ever will.
