The Country Club Wedding, Reconsidered
Clubs are the largest group of wedding venues in the Hudson Valley, and the one couples skip without looking.

Say "country club wedding" and most couples picture a function room with a patterned carpet and a buffet. So they skip the whole category, which is a shame, because clubs are the largest single group of wedding venues in the Hudson Valley — more of them than barns, estates or wineries.
They are not all the same, and a few of them are among the best rooms in the valley.
What clubs are genuinely good at
They have done this before. A barn that hosts twelve weddings a year is learning on you. A club that does sixty has a kitchen that can plate 200 hot, a maître d' who has seen the thing you are worried about, and a plan for where the band loads in.
The price is usually all in. Tables, chairs, linens, glassware, staff, and often the food, come as one number. A barn that quotes less than the club often costs more once you have rented everything a club already owns.
Rain is not a crisis. Most have a real indoor room with real windows, not a tent on standby.
There is a lawn. The good ones have the view that made somebody build a golf course there in the first place.
Where they fall down
The carpet is real. Some of these rooms were decorated in 1994 and have not been touched. You cannot flower your way out of a patterned carpet and a mirrored wall. Go and look, in daylight.
Members come first. Ask directly whether a member event can move your date or your room, and what happens if it does. Get the answer in the contract rather than in the tour.
The food can be institutional. Ask for a tasting before you sign, not after. A club that will not feed you before you commit is telling you something.
The question that sorts them
Ask what else is happening at the club on your day.
A club that answers "nothing, the room and the lawn are yours from noon" is selling you a private estate at a club price, and that is a genuinely good deal. One that answers "there is a member tournament until four" is selling you a function room, and should be priced like one.
If you are ruling them out
Rule out the room, not the word. Some of these are converted mansions with a golf course attached rather than clubhouses with a hall. The only way to know which is which is to walk in — and because other couples are skipping the category on the same assumption you are, the Saturday you want is more likely to still be free.
